Chapter 10

Adeline

Istopped crying a few hours ago but my heart still burns with grief as I lie on my bed, facing the dusty prison’s ceiling.

Halan. He was like a father to me and I’m going to miss our long talks and those reassuring words of his during my days of captivity in my own pack. Halan believed in me and called me a wolf with potential. Up until my father stopped me from talking to him, Halan planted the seed of hope in me and I’d nursed it.

But he’s dead now, killed by a different pack that’s also keeping me captive. I wonder what Halan would have thought of me if he was still alive and he found out I was a prisoner here. He would have reminded me that he gave me the wings to fly. How am I still struggling on the ground?

It’s because of Luke. The one who brought in Halan’s body. It had been horrifying to see him do that and at that moment, I wanted to hate him for what he’d done.

But I know Luke better than that. He isn’t responsible for Halan’s death. When I looked into his eyes, I saw the heart of a man who wouldn’t have given in to such cruelty. Luke’s a good man. He’s nothing like Sean, the devil.

Someone creeps into my room. I sit up straight in bed and glance in the direction I know the door is. It’s dark so I can’t tell who it is. But the familiar scent that hits my nose soon banishes my fear that an embittered wolf had come to hurt me.

“Luke,” I breathe in relief.

He wraps his arms around me and plants a kiss on my neck. “How are you, love?”

A shudder wracks through me. “I can’t get the image out of my head. I can’t stop seeing his dead body.”

Luke’s grasp around me tightens. “I’m so sorry, Adeline. I didn’t kill Halan. I hope you know that.”

I nod. “I do. I saw it in your eyes. You wouldn’t have killed an innocent man.”

He kisses my neck again. The touch of his lips on my body warms me like the warmth of a fire in the cold. God, I’ve missed that feeling. My soul craves it. Has been starved of it.

“But the others think Halan deserved it,” Luke says, his voice heavy. “They think that everyone in your pack deserves to die.”

I face him now and trail my fingers along the outline of his face. Tears pool in my eyes. I can’t see Luke’s expression in the dark which makes me sad, but I can smell him, the unmistakable scent of cinnamon washed by his heat, and that’s enough for me. I breathe deep, scenting him like he’s a sunflower worshiped by the morning sun.

“But they don’t deserve to die,” I whisper. “Not all of them. Edgar and his family are good people. They bake me cookies every Christmas. Then there’s Giselle and her sister, Bobby. They couldn’t hurt a fly.
